In this article we look at ways of combining &#8216;big data&#8217; from a telecoms network with standard <a title=\"NOMISweb\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nomisweb.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BRES employment data<\/a> to generate a more nuanced understanding of where &#8216;work&#8217; happens in the Greater Southeast of England across several key sectors.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Or to put in the terms of our abstract:<\/p>\n<div title=\"Page 1\">\n<blockquote><p>Telecommunications has radically reshaped the way that firms organise industrial activity. And yet, because many aspects of this technology are largely invisible (Batty, 1990), fourteen years after the publication of The Rise of the Network Society (Castells, 1996 [2000]) the corporate \u2018space of flows\u2019 remains largely unmapped. In this article, we combine detailed employment and telecoms usage data for the southeast of England to build a sector-by-sector profile of globalisation at the mega city-region scale.
